Seeking volunteer readers - short stories
Fiction on the Web is seeking volunteer readers for short story submissions. Readers are responsible for reading assigned material quickly and providing concise and thoughtful feedback.
It’s a great way to get a glimpse under the hood of a literary magazine, gain experience, and encounter a wide variety of work that could improve your writing style and craft. It also looks good on your resumé.
Ideally, you would be able to read and review at least three stories per day on average. The estimated time commitment is 4-5 hours/week on average. All work is completed online via Submittable and email.
Fiction on the Web cannot pay readers, but readers reaching service milestones are entitled to perks (3 months - free Fiction on the Web audiobooks; 6 months - free detailed critique of a short story; 12 months - potential promotion to an editorial position).
Experience is a bonus, but not necessary. Enthusiasm is more important.
Successful applicants will be given a trial period to ensure the role is a good fit. This is partly for my sake, to check if your critiquing style matches the vibe of the magazine; and partly for your sake, to see if you're happy keeping up with all the reading. If it doesn't work out, please don't be disheartened - I am super-grateful for your interest in Fiction on the Web and I love you all.
