Fiction on the Web is accepting submissions for online and audiobook publication, in the following genres:

  • funny stories - for when you need a laugh
  • creepy stories - to make your hair stand on end
  • fantastic stories - ghosts, swords, magic and fantasy
  • futuristic stories - many worlds of science fiction
  • criminal stories - crooks and detectives
  • real life stories - everyday life and relationships

Submissions should be between 1,000 and 10,000 words, double-spaced in 12-point font.

By submitting, you warrant that you are the sole copyright owner of the work, the work does not currently appear anywhere else online, and the work contains no AI-generated text (exception: if you have used AI tools to help translate your story from your native language into English, please declare this clearly at the start of the story).

After submitting, you will receive an acknowledgment from Submittable.

You can usually expect a response within 30 days. If you are a patron, or you regularly leave comments on Fiction on the Web stories, you are more likely to get extended feedback on your response.

Looking for personalized feedback on your short story?

Fiction on the Web offers a paid critique service led by our editorial team. Whether you're revising a piece or seeking guidance before submitting, our goal is to help strong ideas become stronger on the page. Our editors provide constructive guidance rooted in what we look for when publishing great stories.

Each critique includes:

  • A general story analysis
  • Highlights of strengths and areas for improvement
  • Comments on plot, character, pacing, tone, and style
  • Light line-editing or sentence-level notes

Critiques are typically 1 to 1.5 pages in length and are returned within 30 days.

We look forward to reading your work!

Fiction on the Web is seeking volunteer readers for short story submissions. Readers are responsible for reading assigned material quickly and providing concise and thoughtful feedback.

It’s a great way to get a glimpse under the hood of a literary magazine, gain experience, and encounter a wide variety of work that could improve your writing style and craft. It also looks good on your resumé.

Ideally, you would be able to read and review three stories per day (or about 10,000 words) on average. The estimated time commitment is 5-6 hours/week on average. All work is completed online via Submittable and email.

Fiction on the Web cannot pay readers, but readers reaching service milestones are entitled to perks (3 months - free Fiction on the Web audiobooks; 6 months - free detailed critique of a short story; 12 months - potential promotion to an editorial position).

Experience is a bonus, but not necessary. Enthusiasm is more important.

Successful applicants will be given a trial period to ensure the role is a good fit. This is partly for my sake, to check if your critiquing style matches the vibe of the magazine; and partly for your sake, to see if you're happy keeping up with all the reading. If it doesn't work out, please don't be disheartened - I am super-grateful for your interest in Fiction on the Web and I love you all.
